How I Started and Build My Home Business Daily

Updated 3/27/17: Thanks to everyone’s help and her efforts, Samm was able to meet her goal and make it to blue status! Congratulations to her and her hard work!

I’m Samm Burress, founder of Makeupinfatuation.com, mother to two incredible boys, and wife to an amazing man. A year ago, I was working a job I hated. I dreaded going to work and came home constantly anxious about the next day. The money was decent and my husband was trying to break into freelancing so I couldn’t just walk away.

A friend of mine approached me about a multi level marketing company. Initially, I blew her off. “Check in with me in a couple weeks”, I said, thinking she’d forget. She didn’t. I’d had a terrible day at work the day she messaged me again and I thought, maybe, just maybe this could be something that helps.

I threw myself into learning everything I could about the company. How long does it take to get to the top? How much time will I need to devote? What kind of training is there and how much does it cost? What do I need to do? I worked hard and trained harder, and my first month I was able to cover some unexpected bills (read as : oops I forgot this one).

Younique - a makeup company

The more I worked and trained the more I fell in love with the company. The extra money was nice. However, the fact that I didn’t have to leave my family to do it was even nicer.

The women were amazingly supportive, and being able to help others increase their self confidence is quite possibly the most rewarding part of this yet. I continue to work my business passionately and continue to grow. I stay not only for the money, but the connection to this amazing network of strong women empowering each other every day. We truly try to help each and every team member as much or as little as she wants.

How many people can say, “I have over 200 women who have my back “? Not many. I never thought it was possible for so many women to work together without competition, or cattiness. I’ve apparently worked with the wrong women. In an entire year, I’ve not been in a single dramatic situation.

When women empower one another instead of trading each other down amazing things happen. I’ve made more genuine connections with other women in the past year than I have in my entire life.

There are so many reasons people look to go into business for themselves. Passion, family, lifestyle among many others for starters.

In February 2016, I took a chance and got into multi level marketing, becoming a Younique Presenter and didn’t think much of it initially. I got a ton of makeup with my startup business kit, and what woman doesn’t love makeup? With social media, the days of home parties are gone which means more time with your family. I was able to run a business completely from my phone while snuggling my little boys on the couch.

At the time I started, I was a marketer for a home health company. I was told to go to doctors offices, senior housing, and nursing homes to convince patients to choose our company. I always felt like I was scamming someone. Not being passionate about my job, I resented work each day and hated my hours. 3 months into my multi-level marketing career, my “day job” was shut down with no notice. I had no job, and I was terrified. I hustled my butt off to not have to take another job. Because I had already switched my mindset to entrepreneurship, I found other skills I had to make money as well.

Now, roughly a year after my “day job” shut down, I’m running for a promotion that only 8% of presenters ever make it to. It’s not easy, which is why only 8% of people make it. This level is for the serious people who are truly running their business. They are going at it every single day just like you would with any self started business. It sounds like a lot, but if I can do it, you can too.

Here are some tips on how I got started and focus each day on building my business.

Fire your boss / upline

In multi level marketing, you have to be in it for yourself. Take the initiative and find the answers. Watch every training you can get your hands on. Now obviously you have an upline for a reason, but they, too, are running their business. They are there for guidance, not to tell you what to do. They are your mentor not your boss. The sooner you figure this out, the sooner you will take off.

Use the right social media platform

Facebook and Instagram are my main two platforms. Why? Because people who like makeup look here for tips, tricks, or recommendations. Figure out where your target audience hangs out online and target those platforms.

Find something you’re passionate about

There is something amazing that happens when you love what you do. Now, obviously I love makeup, but what I’m truly passionate about is the mission of my company. Uplift, empower, and validate all women everywhere. I’m in. Sold. So many companies have missions, but do they truly live them? Mine does and it’s the Reason I continue doing what I do. I could sell makeup for any company I want, but chose this one because it aligns with my own personal values.

Give it your all every day

If you are truly shooting for a replacement income you have to go at it 100%. Every spare minute you have should be devoted to building your business. No business is an overnight success. You have to work every single day to build relationships with your customers, and get the word out there. When starting your own business, no one is going to care about it more than you. This means you will have to take care of it like a baby at the beginning, catering to its every need.

Don’t reinvent the wheel

There are tons of successful people in business. Follow them. Mimic them. Find out what they did to get where they are and implement those things into your life and business. Having a good mentor or source of inspiration to push through will help you get through the hard times when you really don’t feel like working. Find someone as passionate about the topic if not moreso, and then find time to chat with that person. You will find that you are fired up again.

Social Media

I cannot stress this enough. The days of door to door sales are done. E-commerce is taking over. You have an entire customer base right on your social media. This is the easiest way to make the biggest splash. Study how your platform works. Learn everything you can and use it to your advantage.

  19. Even though you are operating from home, you’ll need to still accept credit cards. If you have an e-commerce website, you can set up direct payment with a merchant services provider and bring it all online.
